Enlarged Prostate and Prostate Health Facts

What is an Enlarged Prostate?

The prostate is one of the major organs in a man's reproductive system. It's role is in the production of semen fluid that allow sperm to travel and protect the sperm while in a woman's vagina. The prostate grows as a man grows up, it usually reaches its maximum size at about age 25. However, prostates can also begin to enlarge later on in a man's life, usually beginning in the 50's or so.

An overly enlarged prostate can cause problems for a man. The clinical name for an enlarged prostate is BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperlasia). When the prostate is too large, it can cause pressure on the urinary tract (the urethra). This can cause a number of problems such as erectile dysfunction, painful urination or hesitant urination..

The Stages of Prostate Growth
When you are born, your prostate weighs roughly 1.5 grams. At puberty the prostate will start growing to about 11 grams or so, this growth continues into the 20's until it reaches a size of roughly 18 grams. After this your prostate ceases to grow until you are in your 50's. At this time a new growth cycle begin. This new wave of growth will generally last until your 70's or through the rest of your life, where it can grow upwards to 31 grams or so.

About BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia)
Because of these different growing cycles the prostate is very different from most organs, which generally cease growing in your mid 20's or so. The growing of the prostate in old age is referred to as BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia). In most cases enlarged prostate is entirely natural, although it can cause problems for men later in their life. However, some of the symptoms of BPH can also be indicative of prostate cancer, so it is important to keep a close eye on it.

For What Reasons Does the Prostate Grow?
Currently there is no single theory on why the prostate continues to grow through life, however, most theories believe that it has something to do with changes in hormone levels throughout a man's life.

DHT
However, evidence is growing that part of the cause of an enlarged prostate is the hormonal byproduct DHT (diydrotestosterone). This is byproduct produced from testosterone by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. When this DHT attaches itself to the prostate, it is believed that it triggers prostate growth. Interestingly, DHT may also play a role in male pattern baldness.

Sex Hormone Changes
It is normal through life for the levels of sex hormones in a man's body to change. Although the primary male sex hormone is testosterone, estrogen is also present as well. As a man ages, the levels of estrogen increase in relation to the levels of testosterone. This is combined with an increased presence of DHT in the system that may lead to an enlarged prostate gland. Hormones also might be needed for the natural penis enhancement products to work.
